Refused a visa? What to do next

A refusal is not a ban. Most countries let you reapply immediately. But reapplying with the same file will produce the same result, and a second refusal makes the third attempt harder.

Start with the reason

Schengen countries, the UK, Canada and Australia give you a written reason. Read it carefully — it usually points at one of:

  • Insufficient evidence of purpose — the itinerary or invitation did not convince
  • Insufficient means — the finances did not support the trip
  • Doubt about intention to return — weak employment, property or family ties in Vietnam
  • Unreliable information — something in the file did not check out. This is the most serious.

The US does not give a written reason. A 214(b) refusal means the officer was not satisfied you would return — almost always about ties, not documents.

How long to wait

Legally you can usually reapply at once. Practically, wait until something has actually changed: a longer employment record, a stronger financial history, a completed trip to another country. Reapplying two weeks later with the same evidence rarely works.

What to change

  • Fix the specific point in the refusal notice. Do not just add more paper.
  • Build travel history — a trip to Korea, Japan or Taiwan strengthens a later European or American application.
  • Address weaknesses openly in a cover letter rather than leaving the officer to guess.
  • Never conceal the earlier refusal. It is on record, and hiding it turns a soft refusal into a credibility problem.

NEXTOUR reviews refused files and will tell you honestly whether reapplying now is worth it.
